$ a4 K' c( P/ ^4 K9 _; m6 d& u This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,3 }% d( ^8 N6 ]5 v3 m# h4 Y
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the- D% g) X# y, Y) H
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large2 \7 g8 y3 X% Z* }8 n2 {8 W
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was5 ^) F7 A) p# A$ i$ l" J4 P
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the

version that could be used as an introductory text or for
# }7 A) Y* C( `% t- V; e9 Zself-education./ z# b/ M( K9 ^0 I4 Q0 }# c
An introductory text clearly benefits from the
3 [1 L3 u6 E8 A2 s, scoherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
, p; u+ l& l3 [/ othe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
+ }9 U4 h b, }; a8 d9 y8 Ncompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored0 m, ^+ \$ j5 _3 k1 C
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.7 f" d# _7 Q2 D. L, n- h5 q
This strategy was facilitated by the successful
; G/ H. A1 [- P$ m+ t6 ycollaborations that had been developed during the
& e( v+ t% X3 \2 `preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes4 t' O) o8 W$ U2 ^* f% B
references published through to June, 2006.
