training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination7 Z( t A+ Z9 {9 {
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
7 C$ Q0 a5 U6 |scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
2 n" _7 M( N4 @1 i" hpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
% u) ?' N W- [9 [& J* E6 j# c0 wepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the' p6 n+ F! @) b( l& w% K9 g! m2 b
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course5 @% u2 W0 b! e& [1 Y
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary& @5 i3 r! c/ F z0 b: t
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate" k8 d; r% E1 _. G
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
$ w( q: B9 _$ n% x7 A8 Findividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

1 d# e6 K) {7 u5 b8 ySystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and4 _8 Q1 h) W7 l3 A/ O: t! W: s* j
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
! H2 N6 ~3 q' A1 l: Q* Mwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
. h8 L# W% E& _% d- Uinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
0 X& ?, p+ e8 @biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems$ c/ o4 x% E6 p$ K
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this, t% D: n6 m) M5 }* r
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of- R* O6 v6 |( {0 u- c7 c1 m- R
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
