of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic- b$ r( M: w& g/ q3 x" Z
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
8 g* J% _8 q) g) Xpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
. E1 Q. C! Q" Z7 m( @epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the
3 x* |( X- d- O2 Knext generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
! i' j6 h, @+ E i! {offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
. l5 S8 M) B6 h, `* D1 \1 Ncollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
6 R# L6 S5 X1 S h0 Wprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward4 y7 U1 m8 T I8 I1 c+ y
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and5 J; d# \# a- Z# }. X7 Y# j
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches' ]% T; w( F/ M
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it. B. L& o- t5 _' Y7 F8 S5 e
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of7 {, q2 S4 ]4 u! K3 G
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
. L5 F8 U9 s1 Y; kfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
2 h7 K C* C i T& Kinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of7 q/ n t. O: @& E7 }' n. e
