training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
6 ]+ a+ L/ S" U# cof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic: {5 @" I( n: [' |" P9 n4 l
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
" p: n* q! Z# k) E" P+ P! e2 Mpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
6 m F! b8 o' _+ n1 i' s; M5 Qepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the; [, p/ R$ \( Z R3 K) f' l0 S, ~
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
& p3 _4 S( `7 g" I* Y1 x0 o$ |offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary5 U+ n- K5 E+ {( y
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate; Z: `' G3 R% P- R" B( Z A0 G
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
0 e$ N4 m; H) N% X0 Q+ b* hindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and* I" f$ j) Q/ w% a% u$ Q$ k9 G
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
( w6 p! O. l6 h( X7 W& y( awill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it: x$ n& J+ k7 D; J
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
0 E) H5 X& U; Y) m* b# v4 U3 a& cbiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems. E2 b; l5 ^8 g+ b
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this1 q5 @; ?$ d+ L4 n, c/ Z
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of! V0 R o9 K& Z/ m
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
