and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum
5 n4 m/ C W4 X V2 y9 i/ u* Etraining for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
1 z* n+ c+ _' @3 d' a$ R* Oof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
t3 }7 S0 G, B/ Zscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and. L0 E' ^ L8 v* ~2 ]) W
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
8 j* _: _2 [' y0 `' J" s# hepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the4 Z) ~) ]. {! W% |- F* M
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
! j# r2 Q0 T# }5 P% Vofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary" p7 P1 O/ C5 ~3 n- G
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate$ Y, J9 X7 Z0 g$ o, x
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
& H/ x& I- t3 }/ x3 g, u+ pindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
2 H: W6 | R+ w yprevalent.

/ k2 j4 ?/ u3 P, VSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
! R7 Z) d; c" |! lviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
7 D$ H" b1 e+ l& Zwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
/ g& ]) f( k' r/ Y& K3 h, cinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of" u" a7 C# V# E+ W
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems0 s6 {3 N1 }/ x/ U T9 f3 o: ~3 {+ ^
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this) g# M4 l, e& j4 l* e
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
( N1 ?9 E$ u1 t4 b, R# |virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
