of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic% A4 j' u! L& i
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
& `, w9 v  z. N8 Tpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical3 ]! W- M2 ~2 X- b
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the" r! _7 ]" @* ^" p- x/ h# s. G
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course" }) x3 h4 e" [+ j/ b+ R9 N5 `
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary) L' ?2 i& g3 r, p; `( Q
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate) @5 h8 O8 s4 |
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
1 y' T* f6 Z" c7 F5 m# N, T+ Hindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and1 |* |- A7 H( N" e* {' {2 A9 k
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
7 D1 |6 k) ^& |6 D5 ?$ ~* \will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
0 \  W& C+ H- \into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
8 T! T7 q; v; M. E* W& B5 k8 g2 Hbiological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems5 ~! ~3 f2 i2 _* d, Y$ F0 O
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
# w' J& K; `9 q3 Y2 W" Dinformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
. P8 ~# I3 o! zvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology.
