and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum

of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic% a2 q& U" O0 K
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and9 c) d% H2 o! Y0 s! b# l
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
+ w8 Q2 z2 n- Eepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the" x' A" n+ r! Y. |# p7 z
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course7 B/ h" ?2 b2 q' k3 Y! j; I
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
8 y0 V3 v3 E& z* d/ L/ bcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
9 u# Y* ^( v! oprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward3 A; }3 [6 Z, c& H t( y; Z. w0 D
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more4 U( l6 @8 X9 T, C2 q
prevalent.8 X- u( Y3 s3 K, H4 s j6 U
5 b/ k3 ~* X4 E+ G; CSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
& v; U- s& x: v- a" b+ Fviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
+ U9 {( l( g( Uwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
N9 X$ K# Q2 e( i5 Cinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of4 [: l; a# Q, w! F/ ?. y2 g6 \! w
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
. d V5 z! e. `2 U7 u' E: e% s1 }9 _for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
! s1 M$ A0 j" J2 ?information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of5 b7 Z; Z' |; y% t! c
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
