How can virologists take advantage of all of these new opportunities for scholarship

training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
4 l7 l" n7 n3 D. k& W# B! _of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic0 D% Q9 a' L9 u( ~% d8 z
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and& J2 |+ j$ ~6 h% H
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical8 Z. Q7 c- N1 m
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the6 u6 K6 O" ~0 H
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
' S! \, x( K" y; i" @offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary7 `6 u7 B( [* y0 }8 [1 _' e' ~
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
' Q& l/ ]1 v( c: ]8 n( p" Tprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
( E @* B U! }5 E; b, tindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more' o3 O! A! Z z7 [5 I( z( n
prevalent.
: t: e R8 D; t8 w4 n7 W j; e: x# `% ~, t
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and8 A7 F7 u5 a+ `' q; ]+ g
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches2 W: ]: X- c5 B; G: {* `
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
+ e1 G' H/ L+ t- C: l- ?into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of0 E( l; w r7 T; s5 d; L- r, w
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems* a, ~5 ]* W, c7 b: b: N
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this/ u9 B# m: g5 D% [# l! j
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of' b; Q d. t3 u2 }: o
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
