6 W4 E6 w+ k5 fepidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the( X" |6 I3 t, ?2 E7 t
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course% D9 \; z. S3 V8 E0 o8 F
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
. S7 Q3 c# h) |3 gcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
9 I0 N" H m. e9 e/ `professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward8 ]5 l2 D+ I$ N/ ], F
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more

Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
; n5 y6 R2 m0 n1 ?) _/ z9 vviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
: ]# W! h( m; p0 Iwill produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it f/ H4 O `& D. K/ ^" q+ S8 k
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of3 o* E7 d3 N, z4 I
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems4 f' k" N6 n+ w! L6 l( A1 a2 q. r
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this/ d/ a: o$ P" k y* U' V
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
z9 a, `, D* L# vvirologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
