and application? To address this question, we must consider what constitutes optimum
# {5 n; I/ t4 p2 k; Z+ itraining for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination/ T d& c2 Y: J6 b
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
5 U: b6 w3 W8 {% r, c) zscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
) S6 [$ c2 c3 ^$ Mpopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical0 z+ J7 ]. K5 d5 k
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the& Q# }* M4 J1 Z8 Z$ Z% N- J: s' m
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
, j, g6 |% G1 \5 B( K3 @offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary1 r2 {) t) X7 A7 O: f0 l6 B6 B9 w
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
o) \. Y9 k$ s$ ]3 H* mprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
" M. N6 |2 u: Q3 }7 mindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more* K2 X, u, v8 E$ y
prevalent.2 a, o- Q0 k; W h/ {
+ Q8 f$ G' N8 iSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and
: Y4 G0 a" n- mviral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
/ T7 R- w) ?6 I, u! \will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it: e$ [# G* d- {4 T% J
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of( a% d2 p$ _5 @7 s5 h/ U
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems8 A5 P( J( }9 m
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
