training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination9 @: Y$ n: D6 b. M5 f# }+ a
of small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic
1 [0 V4 a8 I; G: N1 I6 dscientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and7 s, e6 I& a( V
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical$ i" F: V$ r; j* c" N
epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the. c, X; a5 h! _0 Q; {( n
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
3 Z& H' h4 f3 }5 s9 z4 e8 Zofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary* {/ K: a4 F+ @ }' l
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
- d$ b' I' P$ iprofessional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward" R+ {& C3 c' ^$ ~
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more" Q2 g7 K4 P4 b1 Z/ A& r
prevalent.
$ D) Y% V: _1 j: G' G3 \' ~; T) b( O ^& L( X3 i: a
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and+ V0 u% N& a! x& _( h! N0 I
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches: Y6 w; Q; h4 i7 G- Q5 p# p/ ~9 `( J
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
( `: _4 F |/ xinto useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of5 A- F; V! B- g" S% h! E/ f
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems5 Z9 Z) y* n( V! B3 c! j& N
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this6 v8 H7 r0 m$ a4 u$ i1 k3 H
information will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of
