population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical

next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
" K4 V: h; r$ a8 x0 mofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary
+ Y4 Y0 \% _8 V# [7 D; Hcollaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate
. l# j5 U3 n6 X) i4 {professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward
/ w& {0 B8 Y, G6 x( A- ?/ nindividual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more6 [7 ?+ p# `. a# f; a" f
prevalent.

0 B! ~: B9 c$ n' J. d! qSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and9 |/ O K+ B, n- S2 ?4 @$ x" f
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches
D3 S: `3 r0 Z. ~1 ]% {; ?will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it( v8 p/ I6 R; x4 U5 t& T$ [
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of& ~( u- {& ~* k
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
* _- x, T3 w& e9 d( D$ l5 mfor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
9 N- }2 B( K9 J1 E1 c( L! Binformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of, U1 E; B5 Z- z% n4 g
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
