training for virologists in the 21st century. Tomorrow’s advances will require a combination
: ~# @4 _/ M$ K, y- l' uof small, tightly focused groups and large, multidisciplinary teams. Traditional teams of basic' G1 m) T/ T: | N, V, r
scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and3 _+ t, k/ I! T; c
population biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
' q* J" ]. i& O, c6 R2 s$ U) x( [epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the6 Z x2 _2 v: w ]$ _% Q/ s+ d
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course, t& P! q3 B8 s* Y+ u7 x/ C, q
offerings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary, i8 e2 U0 L2 U
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate& N9 P) s$ y* \# p- K5 B# E2 u
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward* `5 |$ w: e8 i% l9 S! h6 M
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
7 A3 |6 H) G* u" [prevalent.- k) K* S+ D. U, S+ w- p2 d
/ w* d- J! E* s7 l: E
Systems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and. o) }) l: u; i* a! @( I( x( C
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches) j8 z& B L) O
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it
8 d3 y& \* H1 | h" {6 `into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of' X: ~3 n" V: }! G+ _# Q6 T2 T. n
biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems
1 s' ]7 V' t3 Z4 x4 M: G. x5 Efor information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
