scientists working with clinicians will be augmented by mathematicians, physicists, and
& p; @( o5 ~2 u8 C; u7 p5 Ypopulation biologists, among others. Integrating new technology advances with classical
' M% S! `4 g. [* |epidemiology and clinical approaches will not be a simple pedagogical exercise. Training the, \9 }# j, I: N! C: C& ?$ j* M8 `
next generation of scientists who can undertake this research will require more diverse course
; X& I9 C. R4 ^) Rofferings, enhanced training opportunities, especially involving interdisciplinary, b+ _2 H8 M( z
collaboration and computational approaches, and instruction in teamwork. To facilitate7 X2 W$ x. j2 N: x
professional advancement, we will need to develop new strategies to recognize and reward3 K& X$ r5 h% `4 w% X
individual contributions to group scientific efforts as team science becomes more and more
( I: k6 P1 N f) m8 F# Kprevalent.

& A/ v$ C5 L' d" V. U% e, Y' HSystems biology approaches, large-scale genetic screens, metagenomics of host and3 P$ y! L( ~+ o U6 W# L
viral genes from related viruses present a unique challenge for training. These approaches# @; W8 x/ ?7 ]/ R# G: N
will produce enormous amounts of information that will challenge our capacity to integrate it9 s# j5 M' Y7 h! y+ H8 K* ]4 X: u
into useful conceptual frameworks. Imaging technology will reveal the dynamics of
7 A7 ?$ s. P2 |; Q0 ?biological interactions at every level, yet produce huge sets of data that strain current systems. ~1 x6 z# K. N/ t5 m
for information storage and retrieval. Methods to search, screen, recover, and use this
; r% R$ Q1 R7 m) g1 n( J& Einformation will provide new avenues for discovery and require a new generation of4 I T$ |/ I. ~& Q
virologists with special expertise in computational methods and information technology. |
