This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
; w' z# T( F0 [8 ~& y/ D6 t( [/ ypublished in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the
! \' Y4 O# r* L' s) ?6 rchapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large6 @+ i7 |; P- a l8 [2 p
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was+ e8 t9 g) V% n+ C
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
. ]; i) B6 O) \: \% P! W* S, |& Ltopic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short

An introductory text clearly benefits from the

the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a
0 J( ^% n0 \6 [" C" @' v9 P$ xcompromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
4 z8 X9 h2 l1 k, N1 I$ o! }by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
7 F! m- a8 j4 u' \ t" AThis strategy was facilitated by the successful3 E: C G( d7 z
collaborations that had been developed during the
