9 t; K7 @( ^, s This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,: H/ ~& ^; U4 C2 O7 a
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the

book contained a wealth of information, but that it was5 F! L1 F, D# d' X0 m, `8 F4 G
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the

self-education.: p. }; @- A" V; k
An introductory text clearly benefits from the

6 |/ I9 c% { r8 dthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a& l- h) q# _& |! J
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored

This strategy was facilitated by the successful3 `6 H& N6 @) K. p7 y! O
collaborations that had been developed during the/ e% |9 \5 |% O+ g/ D# g
preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes
