This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,% }& ]" R6 d$ C8 U% J7 t" G3 _
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the' d- e* ]9 m1 i1 D* F4 Y' @: {
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
% |4 U- P' Q' T0 p8 i- A& ebook contained a wealth of information, but that it was2 L) c, k* w4 e! g# e
unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
! e) R2 i: `) q( l! U& u) atopic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short- L- N$ @( i- j' d, K+ w" Y
version that could be used as an introductory text or for
4 |+ |7 B. d; _self-education.
# a: [9 P" x5 L. wAn introductory text clearly benefits from the" l9 N3 m2 `& [9 ^
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from
9 ?/ }: |, u. [6 s- lthe finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a+ {/ p6 n. x) F6 ]$ T H
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored) H* b) c. O ]
by an expert in the specific area under consideration.4 }8 c* d% V. k: e
This strategy was facilitated by the successful

preparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes

I would like to acknowledge the contributions of the$ \7 j; F9 k) O2 k
co-authors. Their advice and expertise has been essential

have provided extremely cogent suggestions that have

not otherwise have been achieved.
