" z" {6 ^+ {3 z' L' K This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,
: S$ W+ ]2 L9 c) o- D0 M0 h n( @published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the5 `0 V! D: g; Q0 I: W
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large
8 S0 H" Y/ k$ i( P5 b9 Ibook contained a wealth of information, but that it was
4 ~. i5 [" J& q; L, ]% A& M1 ?unsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the
3 z+ J2 R+ j- O' Y3 B( ftopic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short+ S A- M" J$ U b( K! x
version that could be used as an introductory text or for
' a& g7 o3 E; k; Dself-education.; T. Y1 O( y3 F/ D9 |
An introductory text clearly benefits from the7 D' L+ D' K" X
coherence provided by a single author, but suffers from! u, A3 l# @9 X& W8 D A
the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a/ N" v+ N* ~0 _! Q/ j
compromise was devised, in which each chapter was coauthored
+ o/ ^7 h$ w5 |! [by an expert in the specific area under consideration.
: k% Y9 C3 |. A' P; e0 Z: t, qThis strategy was facilitated by the successful
' j4 g0 V0 a: P$ e" m8 g3 kcollaborations that had been developed during the
2 [: c3 ]; ?4 y9 }9 G& Wpreparation of Viral Pathogenesis. The text includes' n9 N6 \2 z) a/ u' m" a' D/ s
references published through to June, 2006.
