This book is the direct offspring of Viral Pathogenesis,' ^# R( c% w4 G# Y" P' [' U
published in 1997. Having read several drafts of all the/ y3 Y b; Q' p9 f' V
chapters in Viral Pathogenesis, it was clear that the large6 ^1 N0 A& m8 k5 o' p: l2 Z
book contained a wealth of information, but that it was
: l! G, E$ v9 ~3 @, b% L: S) uunsuited for readers who desired an introduction to the' i/ y5 r2 Y! Z) n
topic. From that observation sprang the plan for a short5 G8 q! H! \" X

the finite expertise of any single researcher. Therefore, a

by an expert in the specific area under consideration.3 D; x3 ?6 B* l Q) U9 O
This strategy was facilitated by the successful' `$ B( I# H* D: { b8 t
